Woke up in Minnesota and we then traveled through Wisconsin and into Illinois. It was nice to have different topography. Lots of green, rivers and lakes along with rolling hills.
We followed the Mississippi for 140 miles. Very muddy, fast flowing and full of barges. Made us think of Mark Twain and Huck Finn and we remembered going to see Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain at the Lobero Theater. He was so amazing in that production.
We arrived in Chicago an hour and a half late to cold and rain. We had planned to do some sightseeing but the weather and the ticketing fiasco put the kibosh on that. When we went to get our tickets reprinted because our Amtrak guy got a cancellation and booked us into a bedroom, we ran into the agent from hell.
The ticketing fiasco continued. The agent in the Metropolitan Lounge said the reticketing couldn't be done and wouldn't listen to anything about what happened or what we understood was supposed to happen. We were then walked over to a senior ticket agent who also had no interest in anything we tried to say.
Jen texted the Amtrak contact from Portland who contacted the supervisor and then the district manager. Our contact from Portland responded to the text in a couple of minutes and kept in touch until everything was resolved. He then emailed me to apologize for the treatment of the two agents and said he was writing up a full report on the incident.
Finally we got the tickets! So we're on our way to New York.
Sending love R/P
At 5 p.m, Zoe and I were talking and heard a cruise ship sounding its horn. Looked out the window and and saw it was the Queen Mary 2 leaving Halifax enroute to New York!!
