June 27 Tavistock, Devon

Here we are in Tavistock, a small town built on the remains of the Benedictine Abbey on the River Tavy.  The town was given its Royal Charter in 1105 . . . only 94 years to go before it celebrates its 1000th anniversary!

Very charming place.  We lucked out by stopping into the Bedford Hotel to find they had an available room for the night.  Last night I couldn’t find anything available online.

We spent the day walking around the town and visiting its myriad of shops and the Pannier Market, a wonderful historic indoor market with over 900 years of history which is open year round.  Here is one of the outdoor vendors we got a kick out of.

Then we discovered the walking path beside the Tavistock Canal.

We’ve had rain showers off and on all day – sunshine in-between - but very comfortable temperatures.  We are enjoying our very relaxed travels so far.

Sending love R/P
