Pretty quiet days but we did get to explore the Plymouth Hoe which is a
focal point for the city and has some spectacular views of Plymouth Sound. There are many events, activities, cafes,
gardens – very easy to spend a day just wandering about.
Somehow I got my places to see mixed up. We went through the Plymouth Naval Memorial
looking for Norm’s uncle’s name. He went
down in a ship during WW II. Finally I
figured out that his name is listed in the Portsmouth Naval Memorial as that’s
where those who have no burial place are listed. Hopefully we will get to see it before the
trip is over.
Had some laughs with the receptionist at the hotel. No matter who asked her for directions, when
she finished giving the directions she said it was a ten minute walk. Norm asked her for a recommendation for fish
and chips and got the ten minute walk speech.
Turns out it was significantly further away and he ended up getting a
cab back to the hotel. Worth it, though,
the fish was fabulous!!
We decided not to follow her directions to the Laundromat (even though
we understood it was only 10 minutes away) and took the car and GPS. Worked out very well and we even found a car
park within the block. Got a laugh out
of the pub across the street.
We went to Buckland Abbey, former home of Sir Francis Drake and home of
the newly discovered Rembrandt self portrait.
The drive there was a little nerve wracking as it was a single lane road
with hedges about 10 feet high on either side.
When we left we turned the wrong way (no GPS there) and the road got
worse, if that’s even possible. We ended
up at Lopswell Dam and Nature Reserve so had a nice stop and lunch and
directions to get back to the main road.
Just to make things more interesting, it poured rain so hard we could
hardly see in front of us.
Here’s the self portrait.
Sending love R/P
