Full day today starting with a walk along the Bude canal which was full
of fishermen. They have a very different
way of fishing – one guy caught a catfish just as we passed by.
There are multiple beaches in this town but we only got to two. The walkways are not always level creating a
problem for me walking very far so we take it easy. Some terrific views, though. Lots of folks in the water, swimming and
surfing.
Then we were off to two National Trust properties. The first was Sandymouth which is a coastal
property. On our way there, we stopped
in at the Sandymouth Holiday Park and had a nice chat with the proprietor who
allowed us to drive through the property and see the fantastic coastline. By the time we got to the actual Sandymouth
property we were a little disappointed because we couldn’t see the same
views. BUT, we were very thankful that
we had purchased a National Trust Membership before we left home so it didn’t
cost us anything.
Next we went to the Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage
Museum, a family estate held by the Chichester family for over five hundred
years. The grand staircase was
where you could imagine Scarlett O’Hara sweeping down the stairs in her ball
gown to see Rhett Butler at the bottom.
Wonderful!
The Carriage Museum had some terrific carriages but the pièce de
résistance was the Speakers State Coach which we were not allowed to
photograph. This carriage is on loan
from the Houses of Parliament and is magnificent. It was last used in 1981 for the wedding of
Prince Charles and Lady Diana.
We were able to get a reservation for tomorrow at the Jamaica Inn!
