July 26 Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

We’ve seen photos of the Angel of the North in Gateshead but the photos are very deceptive.  It is really quite beautiful when you get up close to it.  We knew it was big but didn’t really grasp the size until we were there.

We decided to go to the coast in the hopes that it might be a bit cooler and ended up in South Shields.  Lovely beaches.  On one beach we saw a structure that reminded us of the Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick.

We noticed some aircraft flying around and realized that there was an airshow going on in the town just south of where we were.  We ended up going through Sunderland and wow, there were literally thousands upon thousands of people there.  We were praying that the show was nowhere near the end or we would be stuck in traffic for hours and thankfully it had really just started.

We went on to Gateshead and went to the Quay.  What a great spot!

Landed at Dot & Tommy’s and had a wonderful dinner out in the garden.  Tomorrow Dot has invited other cousins by for a visit so we’ll hopefully be seeing everyone that is in this area.

Amy came by to pick us up to see her flat.  She had to open her roof so that Norm could get into the car!

Sending love R/P
