Onward today to Gretna Green, a village in Scotland famous for runaway
weddings, and is a very popular wedding destination. Gretna's famous "runaway marriages"
began in 1754 when Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act came into force in England. Under the Act,
if a parent of a minor (i.e., a person under the age of 21) objected, they
could prevent the marriage going ahead. The Act tightened up the requirements
for marrying in England and Wales but did not apply in Scotland, where it was possible for boys to marry at 14
and girls at 12 with or without parental consent.
Too cute a name of the shop
We then drove along a tourist road along the Solway Firth which was
terrific because it was very quiet, countryside driving. We stopped in at Caerlaverock Castle and had
a very nice lunch there. A castle with a
real moat!
Damn kids, you can't take them anywhere!
I think mine is better than Norm's
We then went into Dumfries and looked around there before making the
complete loop back to Wigton. Although a
little chillier than yesterday, still a good day and thankfully, not hot.
When we got back, we got to see Simon (Andy and Pat’s son) and his
girlfriend Laura who actually live very close by. The winds were quite strong this afternoon
and blew over the canopy in the backyard so Simon and Norm got it dismantled
and put away before more damage might happen.
Simon was very helpful in explaining things to us and steering us in the right direction.
Yesterday when we arrived we had to ask a neighbor how to lock the
doors because we couldn’t figure it out.
There’s a trick to it and we would never have figured it out on our
own. We all had a good laugh about that.
Sending love R/P
