July 3 Falmouth, Corrnwall

Today was our day in St. Mawes. St. Mawes lies on the east bank of the Carrick Roads, a large waterway created after the Ice Age from an ancient valley which flooded as the melt waters caused the sea level to rise dramatically, creating an immense natural harbour, often claimed to be the third largest in the world.

It is a favorite tourist location and has had many visits from the Royal family over the years; the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall ended their stay in July 2008 by naming the new St Mawes ferry, “The Duchess of Cornwall.”

There is St. Mawes Castle built by Henry VIII and while we were visiting there today we were told the castle was going to close at 1:30 because they were having a wedding.  We actually saw the wedding party and as we were having lunch, the bride and groom drove around in their 3-wheel motorcycle, saying hello to their guests having a drink prior to the wedding.  They moved too fast for me to get a photo.

St. Mawes is very picturesque and the views from the castle were quite amazing.  This is just one of many.

By the time we were on the ferry coming back to Falmouth we were wiped out and needed to have a nap. 

We met with Norm’s cousin, Geoff. and his daughter, Charlotte, to have a drink at a local pub and then we were off to a wonderful meal at the The Chain Locker at the harbor.  The great weather has continued and we were able to sit outside and see all the boats.  It was glorious.
